Is the Turtle Fur Way Out 5 Panel Hat UPF 50+?

Yes. The fabric is rated UPF 50+, which blocks 98% of UV radiation. What it doesn’t block: UV on the ears, the back of the neck, or anywhere below the brim line. Gulf Shores, Alabama: Cypress wore this at the beach despite having seven other hats available, several of which were specifically purchased for this trip. The cordlock. That’s the whole thing. Most baseball caps either fit or they don’t — they come in S/M or L/XL and you guess. The Way Out has a cordlock at the back of the hat that adjusts circumference from 54cm to 62cm. The moisture-wicking sweatband inside matters more than it sounds on a hot day — we noticed it on trail in a way we don’t notice the absence of a sweatband until the hat gets uncomfortable. Get Purple Dawn over Sandstone if you’re buying for a kid. The Sandstone colorway shows every piece of dirt, sunscreen, and snack residue. Purple Dawn hides it considerably better. We have learned this the hard way.

No neck coverage. Full stop. The ears, the back of the neck, the tops of the shoulders — none of that is covered. For a full day at the beach or on an exposed trail, you need sunscreen on all of it. This is not a caveat; it’s a meaningful limitation for a sun hat. If your kid burns easily or you’re going somewhere with a high UV index and you want to minimize sunscreen reapplication, get a wide-brim hat with a neck cape instead.

No chin strap also means that for younger toddlers in serious wind — or for any kid in the hat-removal phase — there’s no backup system. The cordlock keeps it snug but there’s nothing under the chin.
