Some rainy days in Colorado are really cold days that happen to be wet. That’s where this one won us over. The Amazon Essentials x Sofia Grainge toddler rain jacket has a lightly insulated, quilted lining and an insulated hood, so on a raw, drizzly morning Oren (2) was warm, not just covered. It’s also super cute. The one thing to know before you order: Amazon calls the shell water-repellent, not waterproof.

Best warm budget toddler rain jacket

Amazon Essentials Toddler Raincoat

A lightly insulated, quilted lining and an insulated hood make this the warm pick for cold drizzle. Soft-lined snap pockets and storm cuffs. Water-repellent, not waterproof, and too warm for humid rain.

Sizes: 6-9M to 4T | Waterproof: Water-repellent PU shell (seam sealing not listed) | Windproof: Not listed | Weight: Not listed | Fabric: Polyurethane face, polyester back; cotton/polyester lining; polyester fill

Good for: Cold, drizzly days, school drop-offs, and stroller walks where warmth matters more than breathability.

Skip if: You need true waterproofing for hours of heavy rain, or your kid runs hot. It will be too warm for humid rain or active play.

Is the Amazon Essentials toddler rain jacket waterproof?

Amazon describes it as water-repellent, not waterproof, and it lists a PU water-repellent shell with no mention of sealed seams. Five snaps cover the zipper to keep water out of the front. It handled the cold drizzle we used it in. For a long day in a real downpour, we’d reach for one of the waterproof jackets in this guide.

Where we tested the Amazon Essentials toddler rain jacket

Colorado, on the cold, wet days that show up every spring and fall. Not quite snow, not quite rain, and cold enough that a plain shell needs a fleece under it. Oren (2) wore it in a 2T on school days and short walks in the woods, the kind of outings where you’re outside because you have to be.

That quilted lining makes it a pick for cold days whether it’s raining or not.

Amazon Essentials toddler rain jacket features: what actually stood out

Here’s a surprise: this is a warm jacket. The lining is lightly insulated and quilted, and the hood is insulated too, so if you forget a hat, the hood has you covered. And the elephant print is suuuper cute.

The cuffs are clever. Ribbed storm cuffs sit tucked inside the outer sleeve, so the shell itself isn’t elasticized at the wrist. That’s comfier on small arms, and cold air can’t sneak up the sleeves. The pockets close with snap flaps that hang over the opening, and they’re lined with soft fabric, which makes them great for stuffing cold hands into.

Five snaps run up the front to cover the zipper and keep it from letting water in. The zipper itself has no pull to speak of, so a 2-year-old won’t be zipping it alone.

What doesn’t work on the Amazon Essentials toddler rain jacket

It’s water-repellent, not waterproof, by Amazon’s own description. For cold drizzle that was fine. For a long day in steady rain, it’s not the one. There’s no chin guard, so the coated shell sits right against his face, which isn’t the most comfortable. There’s no elastic at the hem either (the REI Rainier and Reima Lampi skip it too). And all that warmth cuts both ways: in warm rain, humidity, or any running around, he’ll overheat right away.

How to care for the Amazon Essentials toddler rain jacket

Amazon lists machine wash cold and line dry. No tumble dryer for this one.

Amazon Essentials toddler rain jacket sizing guide

Oren wore a 2T at age 2. Amazon sizes it from 6-9 months up to 4T, which makes it one of the few jackets in this guide that also fits babies. Amazon describes the fit as relaxed through the body.

Who is the Amazon Essentials toddler rain jacket best for?

Families who need a cozy jacket for cold, wet days: school drop-offs, stroller walks, standing around the playground in October. It’s warm, cute, and one of the least expensive jackets we tested. It’s not the jacket for a downpour or for warm, humid rain. For that, look at the REI Rainier or the Reima Lampi.

Pro tip: Think of it as a light winter coat that handles drizzle, not a rain shell. On a warm rainy day, grab something lighter.
