We had hit our limit on indoor days. It was raining in Colorado, and we needed to get out of the house anyway. Oren (2) went out in the yellow Reima Lampi, a single-layer rubber-style rain jacket that feels about as sealed as a raincoat gets. Nothing was getting through it. The one thing to know before you order: it runs big. Our 2T could fit our five-year-old, no problem.
Take me back to the toddler rain jacket guide
Most waterproof toddler rain jacket
Reima Lampi Rain Jacket — Toddler
One single layer of coated, PVC-free fabric with welded seams and a 10,000 mm waterproof rating. Detachable hood, beautiful colors. No pockets, no chin guard, and it runs big, so don't size up.
Sizes: 18-24M to 12Y | Waterproof: Yes (water column over 10,000 mm, welded seams) | Windproof: Not listed | Weight: Not listed | Fabric: 100% recycled polyester with polyurethane coating, PVC-free
Good for: Heavy, all-day rain, puddle play, and forest school days, plus families who want a waterproof outer layer to wear over warm clothes.
Skip if: Your kid needs pockets for treasures and cold hands, or wants to zip their own jacket. There are no pockets, and the zipper has no pull.
Is the Reima Lampi toddler rain jacket waterproof?
Yes. Reima gives the fabric its top waterproof rating, with a water column over 10,000 mm, and the seams are welded. It’s one single layer of coated fabric with no lining, and it feels completely sealed. If a toddler jacket is going to keep the rain out, it’s this one. It feels super windproof too, though Reima doesn’t list a wind rating.

Where we tested the Reima Lampi
Colorado, on a rainy day when we couldn’t stay inside anymore. Oren (2) wore the Lampi in a 2T over warm layers for puddles and a muddy walk on the trail.
It also came along as the outer layer on cold trail days when the forecast looked iffy, including stretches in the carrier. Because it’s so waterproof, it works best as the third layer in a layering system: base layer, something warm, Lampi on top.

Reima Lampi features: what actually stood out
The headline feature is the detachable hood. It attaches with four snaps, so you can take it off. We weren’t sure why you’d ever want a rain jacket without a hood, until a recent school morning when Oren already had a hat on, we pulled the hood up, and he said, “No hood.” If you’re right there to put it back on when the rain picks up, taking it off means less fabric bunched around his neck.
Three snaps cover the zipper to keep water out. There’s no pull on the zipper, though, so a toddler who wants to do it themselves probably can’t. The cuffs are elastic (we rolled ours), and there’s reflective trim around the wrists and one stripe down the hood.
Reima’s palette is really beautiful, and we went with the aqua-green. Reima makes it from recycled polyester with a polyurethane coating, and it’s PVC-free, which we feel good about.

What doesn’t work on the Reima Lampi
No pockets at all. That’s both a pro and a con. If you forgot gloves on a cold rainy day, or they find gems and treasures, there’s nowhere to put either except your own pockets. There’s also no chin guard, so the coated fabric goes right up against his face. We’ve already found food on the inside of the collar where it sits against his mouth. The zipper has no pull, and there’s no elastic at the hem (the REI Rainier and Amazon Essentials skip it too).
How to care for the Reima Lampi
Reima says to wash it separately, inside out, with the zippers closed, on a normal warm machine cycle. Skip detergents with bleaching agents and fabric softener, and take it out as soon as the cycle ends to avoid color change. Don’t tumble dry, iron, or dry clean it.
Reima Lampi toddler sizing guide
We ordered a 2T for Oren at age 2, and it’s very, very large. It’s basically a dress on him. On the plus side, it fully covers his bottom, so he stays protected when he sits in a puddle.
Reima says its sizes run about one size larger than US sizes and build in 2 to 3 inches of room to grow. They recommend buying the size that matches your child’s age and sizing down if your kid is small for their age. We agree. No need to size up. Sizes run from 18-24 months all the way to 12Y, and whatever you buy will fit for a long time.

Who is the Reima Lampi best for?
Families who are out in real rain for hours: puddle-jumpers, forest school kids, rainy-climate families. It’s the most sealed-feeling jacket we tested, and it shines as the outer layer over warm clothes. Skip it if pockets matter to your kid.
Pro tip: Order your kid’s current size, or size down if they’re small for their age. Reima already builds in growing room.
